There are a number of things you can do before an outage and during an outage. We particularly recommend that you have an emergency kit with a battery-powered radio and some spare batteries. This will allow you to stay informed in the event of a major outage.
Of course, it is not always easy to stay abreast of an outage with no cell phone reception. A temporary solution is to go somewhere that does have cell phone signal and report the outage from there, by calling us at 1 800 790-2424. If you have a next-generation meter, rest assured that it will automatically inform us about the outage, so you don’t need to do it. During an outage, it is a good idea to use your car’s cigarette lighter to charge your cell phone. You can plug it in using an adaptor or a USB cable, which you can buy at a reasonable price from an electronics store.
