Thank you for your question. This is a topic that’s been making headlines these days!
Our rates are calculated to reflect the consumption profiles of our residential and business customers. Certain needs are not covered by base rates, so we offer a range of rate options to cater to the specific needs of certain sectors or industries. That is true for aluminum smelters, but what many people don’t know is that it is also true for greenhouse growers. In fact, after discussions with representatives from the sector in 2013, we have implemented the following two measures in order to better support these customers:
The Additional Electricity Option (AEO) for photosynthetic lighting. In exchange for a lower rate, customers may have their power supply for greenhouse lighting interrupted for a few hours a day during cold snaps.
Dual-energy rates for the heating needs of eligible farms equipped with a dual-energy system. This is a preferential rate that is generally lower, except during cold snaps.
These measures allow greenhouse growers to save on their electricity bills by an average 40%, which translates into annual savings of approximately $60,000 for facilities with an output of 600 kW, and $320,000 for facilities with an output of 3,000 kW.
Of course, we are aware that greenhouse growing is an evolving industry, and we will continuously pursue our collaboration with representatives from the sector.
