Customers with an eligible dual-energy heating systems, and who request it, can have Rate DT. A dual-energy heating system uses two energy sources: electricity and a fuel, usually oil. The fuel is used as an auxiliary energy source of heat instead of electricity when it is really cold, which is when the Hydro-Québec power grid is under the greatest pressure.
Rate DT has two prices that apply depending on the outdoor temperature, not the time of day. Peak periods for Rate DT occur when the outside temperature is below -12°C or -15°C, depending on the region. During these peaks periods, which do not correspond to a fixed time of day, the higher price of Rate DT applies.
To take advantage of Rate DT, the dual-energy heating system runs on electricity when the temperature is equal to or below -12°C or -15°C, depending on the region. When the temperatures drops below this point, the customer must make sure their home heating is supplied by the fuel heating system, not the electrical system. For a dual-energy heating system to be eligible to Rate DT, it must be equipped with an automatic switch to transfer from one source of energy to the other. It is therefore not necessary to be home for the system to switch to the most advantageous mode, all customers have to do is make sure the device is set to the automatic dual-energy mode.
To maximize savings at Rate DT, Hydro-Québec also advices customers to reduce electricity consumption during very cold weather, for example, by decreasing hot water usage and not running electrical appliances so as to avoid, to the extent possible, being billed at the higher Rate DT price.
Even if part of the electricity consumption is billed at a higher rate than Rate D and they must purchase fuel to heat their home during very cold weather, nearly all customers who have an eligible system save with to Rate DT.
You will find very clear explanations of how Rate DT works and the eligibility criteria on Hydro-Québec’s website.
