Blocked meters are the exception. We have installed over 3.7 million next-generation meters and everything went as planned.
That being said, there are serious safety issues when a meter is blocked; the danger is real—and potentially fatal. According to the Conditions of Electricity Service, approved by the Régie de l’énergie, and the service contract, customers must provide access to the metering equipment, which belongs to Hydro-Québec.
We are required to apply the decisions of the Régie de l’énergie and our meters must respect the standards of precision set out by Measurement Canada. All meters must eventually be replaced for safety reasons, as a result of a defect or because they no longer comply with Measurement Canada’s standards.
Customers can therefore choose between accepting the next-generation meter and opting out, in accordance with the Régie de l’énergie decision. We are confident that through discussion, customers who have blocked off their meter will discover their rights and obligations, and they will be in a better position to make an informed decision.
