Hydro-Québec is a major player in the wind power sector, buying wind-generated energy from Québec producers and feeding it reliably into its system.
Wind power is a natural complement to our main energy source, hydropower. And just like hydropower, it is produced from a clean, renewable energy source. Hydro-Québec will continue to rely on the complementarity of hydroelectricity and wind power to maintain a high quality supply.
Questions concerning the future of wind power and its importance both in Québec and on markets outside Québec will be addressed in the Québec government’s energy policy, which is currently being drafted, and in Hydro-Québec’s upcoming Strategic Plan.
Hydro-Québec is renowned for its leadership in the wind power sector:
In October 2008, the Canadian Wind Energy Association (CanWEA) presented its Group Leadership Award to Hydro-Québec for its efforts in developing wind power.
In April 2011, American organization Utility Wind Integration Group (UWIG) recognized Hydro-Québec’s leadership role in wind power integration.
In addition, calls for tenders aiming at the integration of wind power into Hydro-Québec’s grid stem from decrees issued by different governments over time.
