The Corporation des maîtres électriciens du Québec (CMEQ) recommends that owners periodically verify the meter socket, which is their responsibility.
That being said, we take the security of our customers and employees very seriously, and the next-generation meters we install are completely safe. Our employees are duly trained and authorized to verify the compliance of the electrical installation before replacing the meter. If they detect a problem, they inform their supervisor, who is authorized to make any necessary decisions. If required, the meter will not be replaced until a master electrician has inspected the electrical installation and certified its compliance. The meter fits into the meter socket just like a plug fits into an outlet. The meter socket is part of the customer’s installation whereas the meter belongs to Hydro-Québec.
Finally, our meters comply with Measurement Canada’s standards and have successfully gone through a certification process recognized as one of the most rigorous in North America. The process involves 24 physical and electrical tests (temperature variations, electrical discharges, impacts from different angles, etc.) designed to ensure that regardless of the conditions in which a meter is installed, it measures and sends our customers’ energy consumption data reliably and very safely.
