We are trying to find the best possible outcome to this complex situation. Electricity rates paid by our customers are an ongoing concern for us. The contract for TransCanada Energy’s Bécancour generating station was signed following a tender call in 2002, at a time when electricity needs were significant. However, the 2008 global financial crisis, an unexpected event, saw electricity demand drop substantially on the Québec market. Given this context, suspending deliveries at this generating station represents the least costly decision for our customers.
Following a new agreement, the generating station will be used to limit our imports during peak periods, which will reduce our expensive purchases from neighboring markets.
