When Hydro-Québec says that Rate DT saves our customers money, we are referring to the annual bill. In order to calculate the annual bill, we take into account the fact that part of the consumption is billed at a higher price than that of Rate D (that is, when temperatures are under -12°C or -15°C, depending on the region), and that customers must buy fuel.
Rate DT is established so as to allow customers to pay lower prices than they would under Rate D at all times (summer, fall, winter and spring), except for winter periods during which temperatures fall under -12°C or -15°C, depending on the region. This means that throughout the year, Rate DT customers save money in comparison with Rate D, but because of peak time consumption, savings go down during certain times of winter. Even if the cost of electricity under Rate DT is higher than under Rate D at these points, Rate DT remains globally advantageous on an annual basis for virtually all customers that subscribe to it. To maximize your savings under Rate DT, it is important that, in periods of extreme cold, you use oil to heat your home, but also that you limit your use of non-essential electric appliances, so you’ll avoid, as much as possible, being billed at the higher Rate DT price.
If you believe you haven’t saved money with Rate DT, it is important to understand the reason why. You might very well be able to readjust how you use your dual-energy system in order to go back to saving money. The 2013-2014 and 2014-2015 winters were particularly harsh, and that might have had a considerable impact on your savings. Of course, it is important to remember that you can boost your savings during milder winter seasons, as a larger part of your consumption is billed at the lower Rate DT price. In addition, if you use oil as an auxiliary heating source, you should be aware that oil prices are at their lowest in five years, which reduces fuel costs and helps you save more. One of our customer service representatives will be happy to help you decide if Rate DT is still the best option for you.
